The Satanic Verses controversy refers to the controversy surrounding Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses. In particular it involves the novel's alleged blasphemy or unbelief; the 1989 fatwa issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie; and the killings, attempted killings, and bombings that resulted from Muslim anger over the novel.
The controversy was notable for being the first time in modern times a government had publicly called for the killing of a private individual in a foreign country; and the first time that a book, or calls for a book's censorship, caused an international diplomatic crisis.
During Halloween, the season of darkness, ghosts, devils, and demons - it is up to you to see how close you want to creep toward the edges of hell ... These classic satanic story movies will sure do the job at spooking the hell out of you!
If this horror classic doesn't terrify you, maybe you need a shrink. Movie actress Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) realizes an evil spirit may possess her daughter (Linda Blair). Against formidable odds, two priests (Max von Sydow and Jason Miller)
try to exorcise the demon. A superb meditation about the nature of
evil, The Exorcist was created with adults in mind and isn't
appropriate for youngsters.
Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow), the young wife of a struggling actor (John Cassavetes),
is thrilled to find out she's pregnant. But the larger her belly grows,
the more certain she becomes that her unborn child is in danger.
Perhaps there's something sinister behind the odd enthusiasm her
eccentric neighbors (Sidney Blackmer and Ruth Gordon, in an Oscar-winning performance) have for her welfare. Or perhaps it's all in her mind.
Playing against type, Christopher Lee
(best known as Dracula in a series of movies) gets to show his good
side as the heroic Duc de Richleau, who maintains the air of a
gentleman throughout his tireless battle with a Satanic coven led by
the villainous Mocata (Charles Gray).
Hailed as one of the best horror films produced by England's Hammer
Studios, The Devil Rides Out was written for the screen by legendary
horror and sci-fi scribe Richard Matheson.
For Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence),
the nightmares never end. Still fresh in her fevered memory are her
father's skinned corpse, the evil machinations of her uncle Frank's
reanimated body and the unspeakable perversity of the Cenobites. But
the worst is yet to come. From beyond the Outer Darkness, from the
darkest regions of the imagination comes Hellbound: Hellraiser II.
Clive Barker's directing debut follows the tale of a couple (Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins) who move into an old house and discovers a hideous creature (Oliver Smith)
-- the man's half-brother (and his wife's former lover) -- hiding
upstairs. Having lost his earthly body to three demons, the man's been
brought back to life by a drop of blood on the floor. Soon, he's
forcing his former mistress to bring him human sacrifices to complete
his body.
Staid American ambassador Robert Thorne (Gregory Peck) and his wife (Lee Remick)
adopt a newborn baby boy in place of their stillborn infant … and live
to regret it. All's well till the boy's nanny commits hara-kiri -- in
front of the guests at the child's fifth birthday bash. As the corpses
stack up, Robert comes to believe his son personifies the Antichrist.
Soon Robert is pitted against the forces of hell and must make a
fateful decision.
Demi Moore
plays Abby, a pregnant woman with a curious new boarder in the
apartment over her garage. Turns out he's heaven-sent and is speeding
along the Apocalypse by bloodying rivers, egging on plagues and
following scripture word for word. As the nosy and nearly-to-term Abby
uncovers her tenant's secrets, she finds out her role in bringing about
the seventh sign. This drama's popularity stems from Moore's turn,
which smoothes over plot holes.
A wanderer who goes by the name of Brayker (William Sadler)
holds the last of seven keys that hold the power to eliminate evil and
protect the world from darkness in this rousing horror flick. The evil
Collector (Billy Zane),
however, possesses the other six. Anxious to hold the final key, the
Collector assembles a team of walking dead to take out Brayker,
Jeryline (Jada Pinkett Smith) and the other residents of a rundown boarding house.
When charismatic lawyer John Milton (Al Pacino) recruits the successful young attorney Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) to his high-powered Manhattan firm, both Kevin and his wife (Charlize Theron)
find life on Park Avenue seductive. But soon, strange things begin to
happen, and by the time the pair begins questioning John's plans and
who -- or what -- Kevin actually works for, it may be too late in
director Taylor Hackford's creepy thriller.
When J.P. (Kevin Bernhardt),
a playboy club owner, buys a mysterious-looking puzzle box and mistakes
it for a work of art, he has no idea that Pinhead, "the Black Pope of
Hell" (Doug Bradley),
is trapped inside. Playing tricks on his captor's mind, Pinhead tries
his best to manipulate J.P. into breaking him out of his prison -- that
is, until an astute journalist (Terry Farrell) begins to suspect something.
